A project like this might seem complicated but it is broken down into easy to build parts that even a beginning woodworker can do.
This is a large vise with 12" jaws and will clamp wood, metal, or anything else you need. The prototype was built with all exotic wood but you can use any wood species you like. A hardwood is recommended for maximum strength. This vise is constructed entirely out of wood except for the threaded rod and nut. It is extremely strong and has extraordinary clamping pressure due to the design. You can mount it on your work bench permanently or simply clamp it down as needed.
